ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 vs Kayano 32: Stability Reimagined

5 Mins read

For three generations, the Gel-Kayano’s stability came from one feature: the 4D Guidance System, a firmer foam insert along the medial side that pushed back against an inward-rolling foot. The Kayano 33, which went on sale worldwide on June 1, 2026, gets rid of it. ASICS now builds support out of midsole shape and foam layering, and calls the approach FLUIDSUPPORT™.

That makes the 33 more than a routine update. It feels different underfoot, and it suits a somewhat different runner than the 32 does. Below, the two shoes are compared part by part so you can tell which changes matter for how you run.

On paper the two are close: same drop, a 1 mm difference in stack, the same gel unit in the heel, and no plate in either. The real differences are in how each shoe handles support and how the foam feels.

1. Stability: Pod vs. Platform

Kayano 32. The 4D Guidance System gives the arch an active block of support. When the foot rolls inward, that firmer section pushes it back toward a neutral line. If you overpronate noticeably, you’ll feel it working, and that’s why many longtime Kayano wearers keep buying the line.

Kayano 33. FLUIDSUPPORT™ has no single support element. The midsole is shaped to center the foot, and the lower FF BLAST PLUS layer forms a fork-like frame that keeps the softer foam above it from collapsing. Support is spread across the whole platform, so it’s quieter.

What it means for you: If you overpronate moderately to heavily and rely on the Kayano for correction, the 33 may feel like it does less. If you’re a neutral runner, a mild overpronator, or someone who found the 32’s pod intrusive, the 33 is easier to live with. ASICS positions it for underpronators, neutral runners, and overpronators, which is the broadest range the Kayano has covered.

2. Cushioning: The First Kayano With FF BLAST MAX

The 33 is the first Kayano to use FF BLAST MAX, the foam that first appeared in ASICS’ Novablast line. It forms the top layer of the midsole, so it’s the first thing you feel when you step in, and it’s noticeably softer and springier than the 32. FF BLAST PLUS sits underneath to keep the base stable.

The 32 uses a single slab of FF BLAST PLUS ECO. That foam is balanced: soft enough for daily mileage, firm enough that it never feels mushy.

Early reviews of the 33 have an interesting twist. Even with the softer top foam, several testers describe the ride as flatter and less lively than expected once you speed up. The 32’s firmer single layer gives a bit more response at moderate paces. A few reviewers also report a slightly clunky heel-to-toe transition on the 33, which they put down to a less beveled heel.

What it means for you: The 33 feels better at walking pace and on easy runs. The 32 holds up a little better when you pick up the pace, though neither is built for speed work.

3. Upper and Fit

The Kayano 32’s engineered mesh feels premium, with a padded collar and gusseted tongue that lock the foot in well. Its weak spot is heat: it runs warm, which is a common complaint in hot or humid weather. The 32 weighs about 10.5 oz in men’s sizing and 9.1 oz in women’s, which is heavy for the category.

The 33’s redesigned mesh is aimed at that problem, with a more open, breathable build.

Width is where the 32 clearly wins. It comes in standard, wide, and narrow. The 33 currently comes only in standard and wide, so runners with narrow feet should stay with the 32 for now.

4. Outsole and Durability

Both shoes use a hybrid of ASICSGRIP™ and AHARPLUS rubber. The 33 switches to oval-shaped outsole elements and adds more rubber in high-wear areas. Expect roughly 400–600+ km from the 33, and possibly up to 800 km for lighter runners. The 32 has a strong reputation for durability and wet-weather grip and lasts about as long.

5. Recognition and Availability

The Kayano 32 carries the American Podiatric Medical Association’s Seal of Acceptance. It’s also the last Kayano built on the 4D Guidance platform, so remaining stock should shrink over the coming months. Discounts are likely, which makes the 32 good value if you already know it works for you.f ASICSGRIP™ and AHARPLUS rubber. Who Should Buy Which

Choose the Gel-Kayano 33 if you:
– Are a neutral runner or mild overpronator who wants a premium, well-cushioned daily trainer
– Prefer soft cushioning at step-in
– Walk a lot, stand all day at work, or want one shoe for travel and easy runs
– Found the 32’s upper too warm

Choose the Gel-Kayano 32 if you:
– Overpronate moderately to strongly and want clear, noticeable correction
– Need a narrow width
– Like a slightly firmer, more responsive ride at moderate paces
– Want an established shoe at an end-of-cycle price

Who Should Buy Which

The Kayano 33 isn’t simply the 32 with improvements. ASICS has changed what the Kayano is for. The 32 is a traditional stability shoe built to correct your stride. The 33 is a soft, broadly supportive trainer that works for more runners but corrects less. Choose based on how much support you actually need, not on which model is newer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the main differences between the ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 and Kayano 32?

The biggest changes are the midsole and stability system. The Kayano 33 introduces a dual-layer FF BLAST MAX + FF BLAST PLUS midsole and replaces the 4D Guidance System with the new geometry-based FLUIDSUPPORT™ technology. The Kayano 32 uses a single-layer FF BLAST PLUS ECO midsole with the active 4D Guidance pod. The 33 also features a more breathable redesigned upper and a new oval-pattern outsole.

Is the ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 better than the Kayano 32?

It depends on the runner. The Kayano 33 has a softer step-in feel and works for a wider range of pronation types (including neutral runners and walkers). But the Kayano 32 offers more pronounced overpronation correction through its 4D Guidance System and is available in multiple widths. Strong overpronators may actually prefer the 32.

Does the ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 have a carbon plate?

No. Like the Kayano 32, the Kayano 33 is plateless. It achieves its cushioned, supportive ride through advanced foam construction and midsole geometry rather than a rigid plate — making it more forgiving on the legs for daily training.

What is the heel-to-toe drop on the Kayano 33 and 32?

Both shoes feature an 8mm heel-to-toe drop. Stack heights are very similar — 39mm/31mm for the Kayano 33 (men’s) and 40mm/32mm for the Kayano 32 (men’s).

Is the Gel-Kayano 33 good for walking?

Yes — possibly even better than the 32 for walking. Multiple reviewers note that the softer FF BLAST MAX top layer feels more cushioned at walking pace, and the broad stable base makes it excellent for long days on your feet, travel, or standing at work.

How durable is the ASICS Gel-Kayano 33?

ASICS uses its Hybrid ASICSGRIP™ + AHARPLUS outsole for elite durability. Most runners can expect 400–600+ km (250–375+ miles) of life from the Kayano 33, with lighter runners potentially reaching 800 km. The Kayano 32 carries a similar durability profile.

Can I use the Gel-Kayano 33 for marathon training?

Yes. With its high stack, dual-layer cushioning, and stable platform, the Kayano 33 is well-suited to long runs and marathon training. However, for race day or tempo work, faster shoes like the Superblast 3 or a dedicated racer would be a better choice.

What's the best Kayano for overpronators?

If overpronation correction is your primary concern, the Kayano 32 still has the edge thanks to its active 4D Guidance System. The Kayano 33 will work for mild overpronators but feels noticeably less corrective.
