World Environment Day (WED) is a day of celebration for the world’s environment, conducted by the United Nations‘ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness. From 4-5 June 2021, the institution will be broadcasting the Virtual Launch Gala welcoming the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration comprising inspiring messages from world leaders.
As we take note in our Earth Month post, the fashion industry produces 10% of all the world’s carbon emissions. As such, we highlight Nike’s efforts for sustainability by looking at some of the unique sustainable sneakers out there.
Nike Cosmic Unity ‘Green Glow’

Nike has been on the drive for sustainability for years now and with the Nike Cosmic Unity Green Glow, this is another big step forward in that direction, as 25% of the shoe is made out of recycled materials. The upper of the shoe is made out of the black canvas, matching the tongue of the shoe as well, while the laces come in a multicolored rainbow design. On top of the tongue, you see the Nike logo in the middle of a globe that Nike has adopted for its sustainable shoes. The midsole of the shoe is made out of light green, speckled recycled material. The midsole blends onto a bigger portion at the back of the shoe, more than halfway up the heel, and has large cutouts on it to give the shoe its lightness.

On the lateral side of the shoe, a rainbow-colored Nike Swoosh sits on the midfoot. On the medial side of the shoe, you can see a small Nike Swoosh, again rainbow-colored, near the toe box. Since it is made out of recycled materials, you can see a lot of multicolored specks present all over its surface. The blue midsole is covered by a grey outsole. Grey also appears on a pullout tab at the back of the shoe, which features the Nike branding in rainbow color to match the theme of the sneaker.
