Behind the Silhouette: Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG ‘Patina’

3 Mins read

With a classic Air Jordan 1 silhouette and a decidedly retro look, the Patina is a hot new sneaker that sneakerheads everywhere are highly excited about. With the use of metallic colors in a contrasting design, the sneaker brings to you the best of what Nike has to offer.

The Patina brings to you the original silhouette of the Air Jordan 1 with all the things we love about the shoe, and puts a new twist on the design that sneakerheads will absolutely love.

With the Patina, you get a black leather upper that appears on the midfoot, on the perforated toe box, on the tongue, and on the laces of the shoe. On top of this, shiny copper-colored overlays appear around the toe box, on both sides of the lace structure, and on the Nike Swooshes on both the medial and lateral sides of the shoe.

The shoe also has grey suede overlays present on the ankles on both sides and on the heel counter at the back. When it comes to branding, a black Air Jordan logo is embossed on the lateral side of the shoe on the grey ankle overlay, while the top of the tongue features a stitched black label with the Nike Air logo and the Swoosh in green color. Zigzag stitches also appear on this label in white, giving it a flashy finish.

Another color that appears on the sneaker is white, which you can see on the midsole. The midsole also features visible external stitching that runs across the length of the entire shoe. It is covered by a flat black outsole, keeping the original silhouette of the Air Jordan 1 and giving the shoe a new look in a historically popular shape.

Behind the Name: ‘Patina’

If you look for the word Patina, it stands for the green or brown film that builds upon the surface of metals after a long period of oxidation, and that’s where the Air Jordan 1 Patina gets its name from. The copper brown overlays present on the shoe have a distinct shiny finish to them, giving the sneaker a metallic look.

The Patina is also called the Nike Air Jordan Rust Shadow for the same reason. Besides this, green has also been added to the tongue of the shoe to give it a newer splash of color, stepping away from the Shadow color blocking.

The Air Jordan 1 silhouette is undoubtedly one of the most popular ones to ever come out of the Nike collection. With clean lines and color blocking and a high top, this sneaker has appeared in countless colorways and has remained relevant more than 35 years of its introduction.

Not a lot has changed when it comes to the design of the iconic shoe. The overlays on the toe, the Nike Swooshes on both sides, the compressed air pocket in the heel, the additional ankle support, and the winged Air Jordan logo on the side of the shoe still find their way to the new models that Nike releases every year.

When it comes to the Air Jordan 1 Patina, it has been highly influenced by the Shadow colorway that came with just a black and grey color blocking. The grey overlays in the front foot of the sneaker have been replaced by copper tones, but you can definitely see where the inspiration of the shoe came from due to the obvious similarities between the two.

Design

The timeless design of the Air Jordan 1 that has not only survived but thrived in the test of time was originally designed by Peter Moore back in 1985. The clean lines and simple silhouette of the shoe have not been changed much since its introduction.

The Patina comes in the same original silhouette and has all the aspects that make the Air Jordan 1 special, including the special overlays and branding style.
